Protect Yourself From Fire
Fireplace and Home Fire Safety
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, “Heating fires account for 36% of residential home fires in rural areas every year. Often these fires are due to creosote buildup in chimneys and stovepipes. All home heating systems require regular maintenance to function safely and efficiently.”
Keep it Clean.
- Have a certified chimney specialist inspect and clean your fireplace or wood burning stove

- Remove all flammable materials from around your hearth such as debris and decorations
- Leave glass doors open while burning fires to keep creosote (which is a bi-product of burning wood creating soot and smoke) from building up
- Install stove pipe thermometers to monitor flue temperatures
Safely Burn Fuels.
- Never use flammable liquids to start a fire. This can make the flames too large and go up the chimney or make the flames come out of the fireplace.

- Avoid the use of moist wood- stick with dry seasoned wood. Moist wood increases creosote build up.
- Build small fires which create less smoke production.
- Never burn debris, trash or cardboard in your fireplace. These products can give off harmful chemicals when burning. Also the debris can catch fire and fly up your chimney which may lead to a chimney fire.
- Always place wood on a secure fire grate. Never place directly on the bottom of your fireplace.
- Never leave a fire unattended. Always extinguish the fire prior to leaving the house or going to bed.
Protect Your Home Inside and Out.
- Stack firewood at least 30 feet away from your home. A lit cigarette, embers from someone’s fire may find its way to your firewood and ignite causing your house to catch fire also.
- Be sure to remove leaves, branches, etc from your roof.

- Cover your chimney with a mesh cover which will prevent sparks from getting out onto your roof.
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them once a month to ensure proper functioning
- Extend all vent pipes at least 3 feet above the roof.
