Your Voice Needs Heard!

The City of Columbia Wants to Hear From YOU!

We are in the midst of conducting a community food assessment as part of a collaboration with Unite 4 Healthy Neighborhoods. The Robert Wood Johnson grant is managed by the PedNet Coalition, with additional partners:  Health Dept., Boone County Healthy Lifestyle Initiative, Extension Services, several MU departments, and the Columbia Public Schools.

We want everyone’s voice to be heard!  Food-Facts

The purpose is to gain a better understanding of how consumers make decisions about what food they buy and where they buy it. Many of us make assumptions about food shopping behaviors.  This survey will provide us with the data we need to accurately show how people in this community make these decisions.  Specifically, we are concerned with whether people who live in different neighborhoods, who likely have different incomes, have different factors affecting what they purchase and where they purchase food.

People have the opportunity to enter their name (which is kept separate from their survey!!) into a drawing to win football tickets and $20 gift cards at local restaurants and grocery stores.  The surveys only take 10 minutes!

100 Years of “Come Home” Celebration

The Homecoming Tradition at Mizzou

By Dale Wright
Mizzou Alumni Association- Mizzou Homecoming History

The rivalry between Missouri and Kansas dates back to pre-civil war days, during the “Border Wars,” and so how appropriate for the next “wars” to take place on the college football gridiron. In 1891, the next installment of the border battle began, as the Tigers would face the KU Jayhawks on a different field, the college football gridiron. This rivalry would also become the oldest college football rivalry west of the Mississippi River.

Perhaps because of this intense war between the states, the battle always took place at a neutral site. Most of the games took place in Kansas City, with one game moved to St. Joseph, MO. Due to legislation handed down by the NCAA, the game had to be moved to a new battlefield, the campus football fields. At this time, Missouri trailed in the series by a count of 12-3-5 so there was a need to renew some excitement to this series.

Chester L. Brewer, MU’s Director of Athletics, had a vision. His vision, to add some excitement to the rivalry, was to invite alumni to “come home” for the game. As part of this celebration of “coming home,” there was a parade and spirit rally to coincide with the actual game. In 1911, with a spirit rally, parade and more than 9,000 fans packed into Rollins Field (current site of Stankowski Field), the tradition of “Homecoming” at the University of Missouri and has served as a model for the various Homecoming celebrations that take place across the nation.

Homecoming-History The Homecoming celebration at Mizzou has become a grand tradition and one of MU’s largest events, as well as in the nation. Recently, the University of Missouri’s Homecoming celebration was named the best Homecoming in the nation–the only school to hold such an honor–and has been named a model Homecoming program, by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
Carrying on the spirit of the event it started, Mizzou still has its annual parade and spirit rally. Homecoming at Mizzou has broken the world’s record for the largest peacetime blood drive on a college campus, and has included large emphasis on community service, campus decorations, talent competition, Homecoming hall of fame and many other activities.
Each year, thousands of students, alumni and friends “come home” to celebrate the tradition of Homecoming. We hope to see you all in the fall.

Short Street Garage

Monday night, the Council approved the design plans for the Short Street Garage.

Short Street Garage Renduring

The original plan for the garage included 5 stories and 340 spaces.  But because 275 spaces are already leased leaving 65 available to the public, the Council recommended a 6-story garage with 410 spaces.

The brick on Short Street will be removed to allow for the road to be slightly widened.  There will be a small park built at Short and Broadway. The garage itself is designed to look like a row of traditional downtown buildings and will have a Percent for Art component, key to a city building that will anchor the arts district.

The proposed commercial/residential space is still under consideration by the Council, although the working design did incorporate this space.

Get Your Citizen Jane On!

What is Citizen Jane?

It’s where filmmakers and film lovers from around the world converge upon the small Midwestern town of Columbia, Missouri every fall to celebrate films made by women, engage in lively discussions, attend one-of-a-kind parties and experience what many (both male and female) consider to be the best most intimate and interesting new festival in the country.  We’re getting ready to unveil the crazy circus that is about to hit Columbia, Missouri.

Passes are sold out, but tickets are still available.  Be sure to reserve your tickets now!

The Citizen Jane Film Festival was created to spotlight and celebrate films made by women.

In 2009, women comprised only 7% of all directors, producers, writers, cinematographers, and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films. This means that if you, like most of us, get most of your exposure to film by going to the multiplex, you are missing out on an incredibly rich trove of amazing films.

These are the films you will get to see at Citizen Jane. Women continue to be under-represented in many areas of media. The numbers, however, do not reflect the amazing breadth, depth, and beauty of work made by women all over the world. The Citizen Jane Film Festival, along with its allies from other film festivals and arts organizations, hopes to make this work more visible and to strengthen the network of feminists (of all genders!).citizenjanelogo

The Citizen Jane Film Festival grew out of a collaboration with Stephens College, a 175-year old women’s college (the second oldest in the nation) with a growing film and media program. Since 2004, Stephens College has invited female filmmakers, producers, and writers from all over the country to present their films to the Stephens College and Columbia communities as part of the Citizen Jane Film Series. Growing out of the success of the film series, the Citizen Jane Film Festival first premiered in October 2008.

CJFF tackles the gross underrepresentation of women in the film industry head on by showcasing films you may never have the opportunity to see coupled with unique experiences, lively discussions featuring the filmmakers, workshops and one-of-a-kind parties.  In one inspiring weekend we will show a fabulous variety of films made by women, creating an intimate web of support for the filmmakers and our faithful audience of all genders. CJFF honors female filmmakers from diverse backgrounds and in all stages of their careers. We bring guest artists and audiences from all over the world to share ideas and build a collaborative community to last far beyond the festival itself.

Want to attend, but not sure what’s being shown?  Check out the list of films being shown.
