This week:
Tia Felts, Community Coordinator – Circles

Tia Felts Community Coordinator - Circles
1. What does Columbia need and why?
Our community has been extremely fortunate with the quality of leadership in all of the local elected offices. I am excited for the upcoming elections to continue the tradition of excellence in regards to leadership. Our community has an amazing ability to choose diverse community minded leaders, and I look forward to the opportunity to add to that diversity in just a few short months. My hope for the incoming group is an increased emphasis on public service. Our city is a great diverse community, but, like every community, there are those that need a louder voice. Leaders who put an emphasis on the importance of community service will in turn, create an even stronger community.
2. What do you do for fun?
I absolutely LIVE to spend time with my family. With two kiddos, my husband and I are constantly on the go. We love being outside, watching movies, and cheering on our MU Tigers! My hubby and I love the arts and are always on the lookout for a date night which would include a great show at Jesse Hall followed by a dinner at one of our amazing local eateries!
3. What are 3 things people don’t know about you?
- I married my high school sweet heart.
- I am a very open individual.
- I participated in the local Soap Box Derby in 1993. I ranked 1st in Columbia, and 7th in my division at the National competition in Akron Ohio. An absolute MUST for all children in our area. What a self-esteem booster and a great opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children!
4. What’s the best advise you’ve ever gotten and from whom?
I regularly look to both of my parents and my husband for advice. My father has been known to give some pretty quote worthy advice. The old trust worthy “Let Go, Let God” sure comes to mind here.
5. What are 5 things you couldn’t live without?
HMMM,
- Absolutely my family, each and every one of them
- (as materialistic as this sounds) My Chi Flat Iron (women that have experienced a Missouri summer know what I’m talking about!)
- The Four Seasons
- Mugs Up, Murry’s and Thin Mints
- The occasional Pedicure is always a treat!

Karen Miller - District 1 Commissioner
1. What does Columbia need and why?
Many groups, agencies, organizations and the private sector have been putting their efforts into economic developments efforts but not in a coordinated effort. I believe the University’s new direction supporting entrepreneurial efforts working with the city and county will pay dividends in the long run. Innovation excels when people face a crisis, the same goes for governmental policy.

Top of the list is to take a Caribbean Cruise

Ten Questions with Don Laird
Introducing “Ten Questions” a new feature to the Prudential Vision Properties Blog. Each week, we’ll ask the movers and shakers of Columbia just Ten Questions. It’s quick, it’s new and it’s only here on PrudentialVision.com!
This week:
Ten Questions with Columbia Missouri Chamber of Commerce President -Don Laird
1. What does Columbia need and why?
Overall, Columbia is very successful but it needs a renewed emphasis on generating new employment opportunities. Involvement from the business community is needed in local issues that help business be successful. These include creative incentives for business, strengthening of the retail market of Columbia and Boone County, getting involved in local boards and commissions, continuing to emphasize “The District,” and helping those less fortunate in our community.
2. What do you do for fun?
Nothing pleases me more than seeing my sons and their families grow and change. Many people know I am a big ice hockey fan and love Tiger sports.
3. Where do you see Columbia’s growth over the next 5-10 years?
I see a continued positive growth for Columbia in the next five to ten years and beyond. I think it is a safe bet that Columbia will continue to grow at a 1 1/2 to 2 % rate per year.
4. What is something on the horizon in your business?
“Something on the horizon”…change, for sure. The Columbia Chamber has had great volunteer leadership and they make sure the Chamber adapts to what our community needs.
5. What is something on your bucket list?
My “bucket list” would include travel to interesting places in the US and throughout the world. There are many places I have not visited in the US and want to see, plus there are some unique places I would like to see again. I have visited forty-nine of the states and look for number fifty soon….Hawaii. I would like to go back to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone where I worked for three summers while in college.
6. What’s the next country you want to visit, and why?
I think it would be fascinating to see what has happened in eastern Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, I have nothing to compare it to since I have never been there, but I can only imagine how the lives have changed after exposure to a market change and government turnovers.
7. What music is in/on your car or home stereo right now?
Music does not dominate my life like it does other people. I listen to “oldies” and have always been a Motown fan. Not much excitement here!
8. What is your earliest memory?
Earliest memory is of going to school over snow banks and making snow forts in the large snow drifts around our home.
9. Is there anything else you would like to add or plug?
I always “plug” Columbia as the best place to live and have a business. We are fortunate to have a great community and always lots of change going on to keep it interesting. Now is the time for many of the younger professionals to get involved in civic activities. It is great networking and they will learn how our community operates. The EPIC (Emerging Professionals in Columbia) programs are a great way to start and meet new people.
10. Which Columbian should we interview next and what should we ask them?
Mayor Hindman to comment on changes he has seen in the fifteen years of service to Columbia. Lorah Steiner, Director of the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau, and ask her about some of the key events coming to Columbia in 2010. They have attracted some great events for Columbia next year.
Stay tuned for next week’s Ten Questions!
